Staten Island’s Stapleton projects and Park Hill were warring factions in the 80’s as the crack epidemic flooded the country. This made Park Hill’s Raekwon the Chef and Stapleton’s Ghostface Killah natural rivals. But like Bambaataa before him, the RZA took the wayward youth of his community and combined them into a cultural force that changed music.
Those experiences as a black man in Regan/Bush-era America coalesced into a cinematic, earth shattering album fondly remembered as “the Purple Tape”. It’s arguably not only the best Wu Tang solo album but one of the best hip hop albums of all time. Anchored by @rza, its slang, grandiosity and mafioso themes laid a template for the majority of east coast rap for years.
